Transformers: Dark of the Moon

Director Michael Bay isn't just good at blowing up cities, he's excellent at destroying meaningful stories. On second thought, you have to have a meaningful story to destroy it, so we'll take that back.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon starts out promising, delivering the premise that the public perception of the 1960s space program was really a ruse to cover up an unusual event on the moon. The execution of that sequence is flawless, perhaps the best part of the movie.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon Movies Trailer

As soon as we cut to the present day, things begin to go downhill.  Bay's very first shot -- a tight shot -- is on the underwear-clad bottom of underwear model Rosie Huntington-Whitely, aka Megan Fox's replacement and the girlfriend of Sam Witwicky.  That’s Shia LaBeouf, in case you forgot.

Oh, and there are actually Transformers in this movie, too. We're introduced to Sentinel Prime, voiced by Leonard Nimoy, who is equally up to the task of delivering consistently cheesy dialogue as every other Transformer in this and the previous two films. While there are some notable actors in Transformers: Dark of the Moon -- John Malkovich, Frances McDormand and the returning John Turturro among them -- Transformer films are all about the action sequences, which in this film are spectacular.  The story, however, is spectacularly stupid, though better than the last film, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.

"Transformers: Dark Of The Moon" is easily the best film in the series, and there's a solid hour-long action sequence in Chicago that uses everything Bay's ever done before, but all blended into one exhausting push to save one girl in the midst of a war involving two planets.  It's the personal story on an apocalyptic scale that Bay loves to try to tell, and that other guys like Emmerich and Cameron and even Spielberg love to do.  And this is the best version of it that Bay's made so far.

It is also the best job the series has done so far of turning the robots themselves into lead characters, something the first two films avoided for the most part.  In the first film, Optimus Prime and Bumblebee had their moments, but they were still secondary to the human characters in every way, and the second film didn't really give anyone, human or animated, anything to play.  This time out, I actually felt like the robots made a strong impression, and if there are more of these films after Bay leaves the series, then he's laid out a pretty strong template here for others to imitate moving forward. Finally, it feels like the war makes sense, and the stakes make sense, and it all matters.  Sentinel Prime is a great addition to the series, and Nimoy plays him perfectly.  It's a real performance, and as a result, it makes the rest of the Transformers feel more real.  Cullen is very good in this one, and the rest of the robot cast manages to impress as well.  Even the weird little robots, and there are two of them living with Sam (Shia LaBeouf) grew on me over the course of the film, especially when you see where they wind up.  The Decepticons are way nastier in this one, and so when Optimus Prime and the Autobots unleash hell... AND THEY DO... it is so deserved and so worthy of one cheer after another that it almost becomes audience participation.

The film opens with a rapid-fire look back into an alternate history, something that worked well for "X-Men: First Class" this summer as well, and we see the space race of the 1960's from a different perspective.  I like how Bay uses the "Forrest Gump" technique so we get cameos from the real JFK and the real Richard Nixon, and as soon as the opening is over, we get the main title and BAM, we're into the story of Sam Witwicky, the human lead of the franchise.  One of the things I liked about the first film was the way it took a very natural milestone in the life of a young man, the purchase of his first car, and turned that into the backbone of the movie.  The second film never figured out what human story to hang all the action on, but it looks like they were trying to use the transition from high school to college.  This time, we're looking at the moment where a young man is out of school and ready to start his life, and the frustrations that come from wanting to find a way to make a mark on the world right away.  LaBeouf has gone from gawky kid to young man over the course of the series, and in this film, Sam finally steps up and becomes a hero by choice, not by circumstance.  He is determined to contribute something to this ongoing conflict, and his choice to be involved is very different than the way he gets roped into things in the first two films.  He could walk away and let the military handle things in this one, but that's not who he is now.  He's invested in this fight, and he feels like he has a role to play.

Part of what motivates Sam in this movie is the need to impress his new girlfriend Carly (Rosie Huntington-Whiteley), and while I think Megan Fox takes an unfair beating from people when they write about her, I'll be the first to admit the series does not miss her at all now that she's gone.  Huntington-Whiteley turns out to be a very winning on-screen personality, charming and sweet, and she seems well aware that Michael Bay is shooting her like a car in a car commercial.  She definitely plays up the physical side of things, but I think she's going to appeal to women in a way that Fox never did.  She reminds me of Cameron Diaz in "The Mask," an actress who doesn't really show off any range, but who gives a natural, winning performance and who is up to the challenge of this particular picture.  There's a famous quote about Fred Astaire's most famous dance partner, "Don't forget, Ginger Rogers did everything Astaire did, but backwards and in heels," and I kept thinking of that during the Chicago sequence, when Rosie has to keep up with the boys in some of the craziest action scenes of the year, and she manages to do so wearing the biggest high heels I can imagine.  She makes it all seem easy, and I predict she's going to be cast in more films immediately once people get a look at how she handles herself here.

I mentioned Sentinel Prime above, and he's a major part of this film, the former leader of the Autobots, long trapped in the crashed Ark on the moon.  Casting Leonard Nimoy was smart, and he gives the character some gravitas.  It's interesting… you haven't seen much of Sentinel Prime in the ads, and that's by design.  This is that rare Hollywood blockbuster where you really haven't seen anything yet.  There are so many money shots that haven't been in the trailers so far that Scrooge McDuck could go swimming in them.  The most eye-popping moments in the movie are still under lock and key, and there's a whole lot of story that they haven't even hinted at in what you've seen so far.  I'm sure some critics will spoil the story's twists and turns out of a general irritation with the series, or out of a disdain for the fans, but I'd rather let you see it as fresh as possible.

I'll give Ehren Kruger credit here for building a very solid foundation to the movie, allowing Michael Bay plenty of room to deliver insane set pieces.  Yes, there is still plenty of the sort of character comedy that makes people roll their eyes at Bay's films, but more of the jokes work than don't, and he gets through that sort of stuff pretty quickly.  Sam's parents, for example, are just in a few minutes of the movie, and the performances that don't really work like John Malkovich or Ken Jeong are in and out of the movie before it's a problem.  The returning cast members, like Turturro or Josh Duhamel or Tyrese, are well-used this time, and there really is a sense of things wrapping up.  New cast member Frances McDormand handles herself well, but I doubt this is the most demanding thing she's ever been asked to do.  And of the new robots on both sides of the war, Shockwave makes the strongest impression.  He's a genuine nightmare, particularly in his first appearance, and the Autobots introduce some new guys called The Wreckers, basically muscle-head goons working for Optimus, who I think work very well.  Even though this doesn't feel like a well-constructed trilogy, this film almost manages to make it feel like they've intentionally built these three movies to reach this point.  Even so, I think someone could walk into this film having not seen the other two and they'd get a fairly complete experience.  No easy trick, that.

I know I've mentioned the Chicago section of the film several times, and for good reason.  It's an astonishing mix of physical staging, live-action stunt work, location shooting, and visual effects, and there comes a point where I'm really not sure what was built, what was real, what's totally fake… and it doesn't matter. What matters is that the stakes in the film are crystal clear, the purpose of the characters is laid out carefully, and the sequence just keeps building and building until finally it comes down to three characters and a bridge, and since it's a "Transformers" movie, I'm pleased to see that the three characters who are involved in that ending are the right three.  The focus in this film finally feels like it's on the right things and the right moments.  If the Chicago sequence was the only great set piece in the film, I'd still say it's worth seeing, but the movie actually features impressive sequences all the way through, including an early encounter with Shockwave in Chernobyl and a really creepy scene where a bird-like Decepticon hunts down and murders all the humans who have helped the Decepticons over the years.  And through it all, it feels to me like Bay is trying new things, both in the shooting and the cutting.  It's not a radical re-invention… it's still recognizably Michael Bay.  But the small differences in the rhythms of his shooting and his cutting make a big difference in the overall impact.

Technically, the film impresses from start to finish.  I love that Bay is willing to try to build something this big, this epic, and that he seems to take every sequence as an opportunity, whether it's the opening on Cybertron or the craziest real-life-celebrity cameo I've ever seen (conspiracy theory nuts will lose their minds when they see it) or the way Megatron is introduced in Africa.  The film reaches, and in a summer where even the blockbusters I've liked have seemed curiously intimate and small-scale-for-reasons-of-budget, there's something intoxicating about seeing someone make something so out-of-control gigantic.  Even so, there's a control here that was absent entirely in the second film, and that never quite seemed to snap into focus in the first film.

I've seen the film in a regular 3D theater, and in an IMAX presentation, and they are very different experiences.  In the regular 3D theater, the FX work looks pretty much flawless, and you can take in the entire widescreen frame at once.  In the IMAX theater, you can see every single seam in the work (there aren't many), but you can also get totally lost in the frame.  It's a great way to really look at the details of what ILM and Digital Domain did, and I cant say I've ever really felt a sound mix more viscerally.  But if you're considering sitting this out for a 2D version, don't.  Really.  This is a meticulously designed 3D experience, and Bay impresses often and in a real-world setting that makes this more surreal than "Avatar" in many ways.  It's so strange to see a city as recognizable as Chicago take this sort of beating, and it's a reminder that many movies try to find cheap and generic solutions to their third acts, something you can't accuse this one of doing.

In the interest of full disclosure, I did attend the press junket/premiere that Paramount held in Moscow this week.  I'll have those interviews for you this week.  But honestly... two 19 hour travel days in one week is not the way to win a good review from me.  Especially when I'm flying coach.  The movie speaks loud and clear for itself.  While I'm not going to overstate the case, and while there are still some things about that first hour and a half that may give me pause, it's a pleasure to report that "Transformers: Dark Of The Moon" feels like the film that the franchise has been struggling to produce this entire time.

Double Dhamaal Movie Review : The gang of Dhamaal -- Adi (Arshad Warsi), Manav (Jaaved Jafri), Boman (Ashish Chowdhury), Roy (Riteish Deshmukh) are back. Once again they have just one purpose in life: to get rich, any which way. This time the plan entails duping their tormentor Kabir (Sanjay Dutt) by messing up his personal and professional life.

Movie Review: First things first, part one was better. It was stupid, but it did have lots of goofy humour and fun. The sequel is more stupid than funny, nevertheless there are enough moments to keep the clock ticking.

The entire film operates as one extended con game where most of the chaos is kicked up by the loser foursome of Arshad, Jaaved, Riteish and Ashish. It's one of the most dysfunctional bunch of friends in Bollywood, where each seems to be more stupid than the other. Yet, when they pool in their mental deficiencies, they do manage to create some madcap moments on screen.

In the first half, they try to ingratiate themselves with Sanjay Dutt in order to win a partnership in his firm. And the fact the he has a svelte girlfriend like Mallika Sherawat and a siren sister like Kangana Ranaut motivates them further. But when they realize the tycoon has put them in a soup by peddling gutter water in the middle of Mumbai as oil, they know it's time for revenge. Specially since they are being hounded by the local gangster (Satish Kaushik) who is baying for their blood. Act two is all about vengeance and one upmanship between the foursome and Sanjay Dutt.

This one's definitely not for the fastidious, choosy viewer but for those who don't mind losing it for a bit, Double Dhamaal works like an average Bollywood comedy. Performance-wise, it's one big circus with the guys hogging most of the limelight. The girls -- Mallika and Kangana -- are mere confetti.

Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara rip-off movie Lords of Dogtown

You would think Zoya Akhtar, daughter of living legend Javed Akhtar, would be an ‘original’ director just like her father is an original lyricist and a scriptwriter. It should be in her genes, right? Apparently not.

Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara’s poster is a barefaced rip-off from the Hollywood movie Lords of Dogtown, a biographical film directed by Catherine Hardwicke.

If that’s not enough, there is another allegation that the movie has an uncanny resemblance to Todd Philips's blockbuster The Hangover. As a result Feroze Naiadwala, who bought the official rights to remake the Hollywood hit in Hindi, is planning to squash his plans for the film

Movie Review: Bbuddah Hoga Terra Baap

    Story

Story: Story: When the entire city is living under the threat of underworld, Vijju (Amitabh Bachchan), a criminal cum pub owner from Paris, returns to Mumbai to complete a secret mission. Underworld don Kabir (Prakash Raj) is on a look out for someone who can kill ACP Karan (Sonu Sood).  Highly impressed by Vijju, Kabir hires him to get Karan out of his way. On the other hand, Karan has a parallel romantic track distracting him enough. His past revisits him, when he accidentally bumps into Tanya (Sonal Chauhan) at the police station. Karan’s in a fix, for he’s always had feelings for Tanya as the two of them went to same college. The movie progresses with Vijju flaunting enough style, attitude, action and masala – he beats hooligans to death, delivers killer dialogues, saves girls from eve-teasers and reacts strongly every time he's called ‘Bbuddah’. Another interesting character, Amrita (Charnmi Kaur), who plays Tanya's friend, is a flamboyant girl, in search of a suitable match for herself, until she finds out that her mother (Raveena Tandon) has fallen head over heels for Vijju, when she should be actually searching for a son-in-law.

What follows next is complete chaos, drizzled with a masala mix of kicks, punches, threats, blows and few memorable killer dialogues.

Story treatment: Definitely not to be missed, for the superstar is surely back and that too with a bang! Every minute of the movie relives Amitabh's iconic 'angry man' avatar and no one complains. The film is a complete masala movie with all the necessary ingredients, which bring back the memories of action classics. As the name suggests, the film revolves completely around Amitabh, whose over the top tactics leave one wondering, how a 69 year old 'Bbuddah' can be so charismatic and magnetic. The story is made to take a turn in the latter half, but thankfully it’s still funny. The forced humour does provide the flick with certain stickiness. The umpteen number of action sequences clubbed with cheesy dialogues, do give one a feeling that this isn't a movie you can catch with kids, but it’s just been made to entertain Amitabh fans!

Star Cast: The film is an answer to all those who were yearning to see Amitabh do some hardcore action, all these years. And, Amitabh couldn't have had a better action comeback than 'Bbuddah Hoga Terra Baap'. Amitabh is brilliant as Vijju, for he leaves no possibility for anyone to raise a question at his acting prowess. His loud yet funky outfits and the unique style of sporting two wrist watches at a time, will be a rage amongst his fans in no time. Watching a 69 year old 'hell of a superstar' ride a Harley Davidson, is breathtaking. Guess Abhishek should take a cue! Sonu Sood is honest in his attempt and plays his part well. Raveena Tandon’s comeback isn’t anything to rave about, for she looks completely unreal in the movie. Sonal Chauhan looks beautiful and it seems that she was only paid to only look pretty. If you opt for a restroom break, chances are you’d miss out on Hema Malini, for she’s just there to cash on the ‘Baghban’ magic. Prakash Raj and Makrand Deshpande churn out a brilliant performance in their short roles. But, it's the new discovery, Tollywood actress Charnmi Kaur, who manages to steal the show with her flamboyant frolics.

Direction: Director Puri Jagannadh has helmed ‘Bbuddah’ in a fashion that it seems he only wanted to cater to Amitabh fans. His depiction of Amitabh, is as glitzy as it can get and Puri accomplishes that beautifully. He succeeds in his endeavor of trying to find a perfect balance between Bachchan's action sequences and his overt mood swings, q. In the meantime, he also manages to make the best possible use of a huge star cast, in delivering a complete paisa-vasool.

Dialogues/ Cinematography/Music: If the dialogues, action sequences and the witty humour of Bachchan weren't enough, the film also presents the superstar, as the main singer, with four out five songs sung by the megastar himself. Though the songs aren't extraordinary, they seem just fine while one's watching the flick. The item number sung by Amitabh along with son Abhishek, is an interesting rap, where the old tracks of 80s, have been mixed well. Dialogues, especially those delivered by Amitabh are sure to be greeted by huge applause and whistles. Talking about the action sequences, the stunt and explosion shots manage to keep up the pace of the movie. The fight sequence that introduces Amitabh and the climax scene, have been shot to perfection and will make the masses go hysterical.

3 Ups and 3 Downs: ‘Bbuddah’ is old wine in a new bottle, but it is indeed a complete entertainer. Amitabh, in his never seen before stud attitude and a stylish angry 'old' man avatar, definitely wins the hearts of his viewers by churning out something interesting. This one's a must watch for all the die-hard fans of Amitabh! He holds the film on his strong shoulders and one can’t imagine anyone else playing ‘Vijju’. Don't seek sophistication in this one. It should be enjoyed for its garish flavour.

Director Prakash Jha unveiled the first look of his new film Aarakshan amidst much fanfare at Hotel Novotel in Juhu, a western Mumbai suburb. Amitabh Bachchan and Prateik Babbar, who play central characters in the film, were present at the event along with lyricist Prasoon Joshi.

Jha, who is known for making films that underline socially-relevant issues, said about his new film, "With the movie I am not trying to target any one issue in our society. Reservation happens everywhere in our society and my attempt was to pick a story which is relevant enough to be told through a visual medium to a wider audience."

He added, "In real-life stories, there is such tremendous amount of drama and conflict. Also the way our society is moving ahead comes with its own important decisions.

Google Celebrate 96th Birthday Guitar Hero Les Paul A Musical Genius

Les Paul's Google's Home Page Celebrate 96th Birthday Guitar Hero

Les Paul, the legendary guitar virtuoso and unparalleled musical visionary, passed away on the night of August 12, 2009 in a New York hospital, plunging the world of music into mourning. He was 94 years of age.

Les Paul, who was affectionately called Wizard of Waukesha, is indisputably one of the world’s most accomplished, influential and revered guitarists. But the crowning glory of his glittering achievements in the musical sphere, which has taken him beyond the realm of the ordinary and into the extra-ordinary, has been his innovations in the development of the electric guitar.

Les Paul is credited with the creation of the most iconic solid body guitar ever – the Gibson Les Paul. Even while the magnificence of the music he created has passed into history, the splendor of the electric guitar sound he gifted to guitarists, old and new, has endured through the years and kept his musical legacy alive. Every time a band performs on stage, whether it is Led Zeppelin, Sex Pistols or Green Day, Les Paul comes alive in the sound of their music.
Les Paul Changed The Sound Of Music

Les Paul’s innovations with the techniques of sound recording are no less revolutionary. His groundbreaking inventions in the sphere of recording have changed the way we perceive music today. Some of the techniques he’s pioneered are close miking, overdubbing, multi-tracking and echo delay. These techniques forever changed the way music was recorded and allowed musicians to play around with a variety of sound-effects while making music. His avant-garde inventions have earned him a place in the Inventors’ Hall Of Fame, bringing him on par with inventors of the caliber of Alexander Graham Bell, Thomas Edison and the Wright Brothers.

There is hardly a musical soul in the world today whose life has not been touched by Les Paul’s contributions to modern music, whether they are a guitar player or just a listener. Guitar greats such as Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Keith Richards, Eddie Van Halen, Jeff Beck and Slash are just some of the musical luminaries that venerate Les Paul’s immense genius as the driving force behind their success.

Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page once wrote of Paul, “He’s the man who started everything. He’s just a genius.” While sharing a stage with Paul, Eddie Van Halen once told him, “Without the things you’ve done, I wouldn’t be able to do half the things I do.” Les Paul is not considered rock royalty for nothing, so complete is his synonymy with the electric guitar, that people sometimes credit him to be its inventor.

Les Paul’s achievements as an inventor and innovator have sometimes overshadowed his indelible prowess as a mesmerizing performer. But the fact remains that his melodious jazz and pop-flavored compositions and his skill as a guitarist are vital elements of his musical genius. He achieved phenomenal success as a solo performer as well as a duo with his wife, singer Mary Ford. His effervescent and energetic musical masterpieces are also noteworthy because of his use of the radical techniques of multi-tracking and overdubbing.

Born as Lester William Polfus on June 9, 1915 in Waukesha, Wisconsin, Les Paul showed an early interest in music as well as technology. He had built his first crystal radio by the tender age of nine. Around the same time, after learning to play the harmonica and the banjo, Les Paul turned his attention to mastering the art of playing guitar. By the time he was thirteen years old, Paul was already a semi-professional honky-tonk guitarist.

A Young Les PaulAt age 17, he dropped out of high school to play in Sunny Joe Wolverton’s Radio Band in St. Louis under the moniker ‘Rhubarb Red’. By 1934, he was in Chicago where he became popular in a dual radio persona, doing a hillbilly act as Rhubarb Red and playing jazz as Les Paul. In 1936, he formed the Les Paul Trio with Jimmy Atkins on vocals and Ernie Newton on bass. The group moved to New York in 1937, where they joined Fred Waring’s NBC radio show as regulars in his Pennsylvanians band.

Around this time in the mid-thirties, even as his musical career was finding its feet, Paul was becoming increasingly dissatisfied with the sound of the first generation of commercially available hollow-body electric guitars. The thin tone, lack of sustaining power and feedback problems of the guitars spurred him on to develop his own prototype of the electric guitar – one which would have a better sustain, clear sound and no feedback. As he told writer Jim O’Donnell,

“What I wanted to do is not have two things vibrating. I wanted the string to vibrate and nothing else. I wanted the guitar to sustain longer than an acoustical box and have different sounds than an acoustical box.”

He figured that to eliminate the sound of the resonance of the wood in the electric guitars in use at the time, they would have to have a solid body as against the traditional hollow body. Persevering in that direction, his efforts bore fruit in 1941, when he built his famous prototype, solid body guitar out of a four foot long piece of pine with strings, an electric pickup and a plug. To make the contraption look like a guitar, he sawed an Epiphone hollow body guitar in half and fixed the two halves onto the wood piece. He nicknamed it ‘The Log’. The Gibson Guitar Company wasn’t very enamored with the model however and dismissed it saying it was nothing more than a “broomstick with pickups”.

In the meantime, Paul’s musical aspirations were moving towards jazz. He left Waring in 1941 and moved to LA where he was recruited to play in the Armed Forces Radio Service alongside such greats as Bing Crosby and the Andrew sisters. As a last minute replacement for Oscar Moore, Paul gave a dazzling performance with superstars like Nat King Cole and Illinois Jacquet in the inaugural “Jazz at the Philharmonic” concert in Los Angeles in 1944. The same year, Paul’s Trio appeared on Bing Crosby’s hit radio show. The two also recorded together several times, including the 1945 number one hit and million-seller, “It’s Been a Long, Long Time.”

It was Bing Crosby who encouraged Paul’s experiments in recording techniques and even sponsored his first recording studio built in Paul’s LA garage in 1945. It was in this studio that Paul developed his futuristic techniques – multi-tracking, echo delay and overdubbing which forever changed the way music was recorded.

In 1947, Paul showcased the magic of multi-tracking in the complex and revolutionary instrumental piece ‘Lover’. The instrumental, released by Capitol Records, featured Paul playing eight different guitar parts simultaneously and was a runaway hit. The world listened in astonishment to the spectacular effects that could be created by using the technique of multi-tracking.
The Near Loss Of A Legend

In 1948, the world nearly lost the musical magician to a devastating car accident in Oklahoma. Les Paul’s right arm and elbow were shattered in the process. Doctors told him that they wouldn’t be able to restore movement in the elbow and it would be best to amputate the arm. But Paul convinced them to permanently set the arm at such an angle as to be able to cradle and pick a guitar! He was thus able to salvage his music career from destruction. Total recovery was still a year and a half away.

Not letting the tragedy bog him down, Paul forged ahead with more innovations in the recording sphere such as sound on sound recording, echo delay and close miking. These effects were all integrated into the 1950 historic tour de force, the No.1 hit ‘How High the Moon’, a duo with wife Mary Ford whom he had met and married in 1949. The song is an aural masterpiece because of its scintillating sonic effects, a fitting culmination to Paul’s tireless efforts towards innovation. A number of hits followed such as ‘Mockin Bird Hill’, ‘The World Is Waiting for the Sunrise’ and ‘Vaya Con Dios’ and their successful collaboration continued till 1961 after which the hits surprisingly dried up. In 1964, the two divorced and went their separate ways. Paul went into semi-retirement as far as making music was concerned.
Achievements And Honors

In 1952, Les Paul introduced his musical marvel – the 8 track tape recorder, and immediately thereafter, his dream guitar in collaboration with Gibson Guitar Company – the gold top, solid body guitar christened the Gibson Les Paul Goldtop. The guitar was an instant hit among musicians of every genre. The popularity and respect it commands remain unmatched and unsurpassed to this day.

Gibson followed up the success of the model with the Les Paul Custom (1954), the Les Paul Junior (1954), the Les Paul Special (1955) and the iconic Les Paul Standard (1958). Paul also patented the floating bridge pickup and the electro-dynamic pickup. Les Paul guitars are the chosen axes of some of the great guitarists of the modern music scene.

Les Paul resurfaced in 1977 to record a Grammy award winning compilation of instrumental duets with his long time friend Chet Atkins, dubbed ‘Chester and Lester’. In 2006, he released the double Grammy winner ‘Les Paul & Friends – American Made World Played’, an eclectic compilation featuring Paul’s illustrious disciples and devotees – a veritable who’s who of the guitar world, such as Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, Jeff Beck, Buddy Guy, Joe Perry etc, playing alongside Paul. Till his death, he continued to play a weekly gig at the Iridium Club in New York.

Les Paul remains the only individual in the history of music to share membership in the Grammy Hall of Fame (1978), Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (1988), the National Inventors Hall of Fame (2005), and the National Broadcasters Hall of Fame (2006). In addition to these honors, he has received the Grammy award for lifetime technical achievement in 2001 and was ranked #46 by Rolling Stone magazine in its list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of all time.

Les Paul’s chequered and multi-dimensional life is a source of constant encouragement to every individual who strives to achieve the highest pinnacles of success in his or her chosen field. His tenacity, perseverance and diligence to realise his dreams against all odds, even while beating the kind of tragedies that would destroy a lesser man, has made him the epitome of inspiration to every human being.
